Emotional Support Animal Letters

Ideal for people in grief, emotional support animals offer a comforting presence in the face of debilitating mental illnesses by lessening the symptoms related to their handler’s disability. An emotional support animal can be any domesticated animal.

Our emotional support animal letters document a client’s need and benefit for an assistance animal, and contain the following:

  • Client’s disability and disability-related need for the assistance animal.
  • Detailing at least one major life activity that is significantly impacted by this disability.
  • Documenting the nexus between the assistance animal and the lessening of the symptoms related to the client’s disability.

For instance, John Doe has significant issues with sleep, which is a major life activity. Thankfully, because of John’s emotional bond with his cat, the cat helps John sleep better through the night.  The cat would be considered an emotional support animal.

Property managers may require verification

The Fair Housing Act allows a property manager to require the completion of a short verification form confirming the client’s emotional/psychiatric disability. This form, known as a Reasonable Accommodation Request form, is usually one to five pages and contains non-therapeutic questions.

At ESAD, we employ a fair housing expert to help our clinicians accurately complete this extra step.
